چکیده

In this paper we evaluate various aspects of the ABR flow control schemes using three different evaluation techniques: analysis, simulation and experiments. A discrete-time Markov model alows the evaluation of the influence of different system parameters (distance between source and switch, burstiness of CBR/VBR traffic, time in between computation of Allowed Cell Rate and burstiness of ABR traffic)) on the ABR traffic throughput and the ABR buffer requirements. This study leads to some simple engineering rules for the ABR service category. We investigate through simulation the ability of the ERICA+ switch algorithm to provide minimum throughput guarantees to Internet TCP/IP traffic. In addition, tow types of experiments have been performed, each one using different ABR equipment. The first set of experiments have been carried out at the EXPERT testbed in Basel (CH) using one of the pioneer commercial ABR switches by ATM Systems. In the experiments we investigate the efficiency of the ABR service when the network resources are shared with guaranteed rate traffic and the effect of a long distance delay on the feedback loop. The second experimental investigation is based on an ABR Access Service Multiplexer, developed within the Corporate Research Center of Alcatel, Antwerp. In this case, the performance and buffer requirements of TCP traffic multiplexed with priority VBR background traffic in an ABR queue is evaluated. The outcome of this study is a set of guidelines for dimensioning an ABR access configuration for the efficient transport of Internet TCP traffic.

Congestion Control and Charging for the ABR Service Category in ATM Networks

The Available Bit Service (ABR) is a promising “best effort” service designed to achieve in ATM networks high efficiency and low cell loss. Since the ATM Forum approved a first standard, intensive research has been done about ABR. The aim of this paper is to analyse the main research topics involved in ABR, namely: the evaluation of traffic and congestion control schemes, conformance definition...

Advanced Mechanisms for Available Rate Usage in ATM and Differentiated Services Networks

The Available Bit Rate (ABR) service category was defined for ATM networks in order to provide a minimal guaranteed rate while letting a user exploit additional unused capacity from other service categories. In this paper experiences with an implementation of a driver enabling ABR support and the steps needed to integrate it in an end system are described. Furthermore, the deployment of ABR in ...

M1, M2, ..., Mk/G1, G2,..., Gk/l/N Queue with Buffer Division and Push-Out Schemes for ATM Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper, loss probabilities and steady state probabilities of data packets for an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network are investigated under the buffer division and push-out schemes. Data packets are classified in classes k which arrive in Poisson fashion to the service facility and are served with general service rate under buffer division scheme, finite buffer space N is divided in...

Performance evaluation of a general traffic control framework in ATM networks

This paper presents a general traac control framework for Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks with its performance evaluation. The proposed traac control scheme can incorporate all the recently considered ATM service classes including Constant Bit Rate (CBR), real time Variable Bit Rate (rtVBR), non-real time Variable Bit Rate (nrVBR), Available Bit Rate (ABR) and Unspeciied Bit Rate (UBR...

Dynamic reservation TDMA protocol for wireless ATM networks

A dynamic reservation time division multiple access (DR-TDMA) control protocol that extends the capabilities of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks over the wireless channel is proposed in this paper. DR-TDMA combines the advantages of distributed access and centralized control for transporting constant bit rate (CBR), variable bit rate (VBR), and available bit rate (ABR) traffic efficien...
